The Underpinning Truth: Choosing the Right Undergarments for Travel

Hey lovely travelers!

If you want to read an embarrassing story about me stick around.  Ask any of my close friends and they will tell you that one of my favorite topics is undergarments and choosing what undergarments to travel with just brings two of my favorite topics together. When it comes to traveling, we often put a lot of thought into what we’re packing in terms of outfits, accessories, and shoes. But how many of us give a second thought to the undergarments we are packing? They are, after all, the foundation of our outfits, and believe it or not, they hold the power to make or break our travel experience!

The Bra Basics

VERY Broadly classifying, we have three kinds of bras to work with: sports bras, molded cup, and unlined. Each comes with its own territory of comfort and suitability with different outfits:

  • Molded Cup Bras: Your go-to for t-shirts and smooth knits, ensuring no unwanted lines and a smooth silhouette.
  • Unlined/Lace Bras: Ideal with button-ups and dresses — trust me on this, your garments just lay better, enhancing your look effortlessly.
  • Sports Bras: I’ll leave it up to your personal style and comfort to pair these with your favorite outfits.

Yes, rules are meant to be broken, and I do it too! But when traveling, comfort should be your guiding principle.

The Right Fit

Speaking from nearly 7 years of experience fitting women for bras in various retail locations, I can assure you: if your bra is uncomfortable, it is not the right size. Here’s a little tip: a well-fitted bra should stay level around your body. They work a little like a teeter-totter; in other words, if the back slides up, something else goes downhill.

The Importance of the Right Undergarments

Undergarments, though unseen, have a major role in how we present ourselves. They give us a beautiful silhouette, making us feel more ‘us.’ This is never going to be the site to find your perfect undies. But I'm here to guide you to make the best choices for comfort and style.

With the right undergarments, you not only enhance your outfit but also avoid uncomfortable situations that can ruin your travel day. To give you a taste of what I mean, here’s a funny, slightly embarrassing, yet very real story from one of my own travel experiences:

My most recent international flight was at a respectful 12:15 PM, allowing me ample time to get to the airport without a morning rush. Well, that was the plan anyway...

As always I packed up everything the day before my flight and left out my "Travel Day" outfit. Determined to be comfortable during my travel, I chose a pair of heavenly silky pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a new pair of underpants and my favorite travel day bra. As I rushed around, I ignored the uneasy drooping sensation, convincing myself that I'd be sitting most of the time anyway.

With every step on my way to the tube station, I would give an occasional tug to this new waistband — a little to the right, a little to the left. Despite my attempts to secure them with high waist positioning or speed walking, nothing seemed to work. My solution was somewhat ridiculous but necessary; holding up one side of the underpants while maneuvering my luggage with the other hand.

At the tube station, my ‘ingenious’ plan met its first hurdle: stairs! There, amidst fellow commuters, I tried to both maintain decency and manage my luggage.

During the 45-minute train ride, instead of strategizing a solution, my mind drifted to future travel plans and nursing a hangover. Before I knew it, I was amidst a sea of people, waddling awkwardly with my coat tied tightly to hide the comedy happening underneath. By the time I arrived at Heathrow departures, I was practically walking like John Wayne post-horse ride, my underpants having migrated to my thighs.

I attempted a subtle rearrangement before checking in but was quickly interrupted by the most picture-perfect Virgin Atlantic agent guiding me to another kiosk. With people surrounding me in the slow-moving check-in line, I managed a discreet hoist up of the waistband, praying it would hold until security.

The next challenge was the seemingly never-ending walk to the very end of terminal 3, which I think was at least 100 miles away, giving me déjà vu of my earlier disastrous walk.

I had enough. I located the nearest restroom and grabbed two hair ties from my backpack, creating makeshift ponytails on each side of the underpants waistband to hold them up. Triumphantly exiting the restroom. Feeling victorious I took a few moments and grabbed a soda and sandwich from the newsstand. When I finally reached my gate I sat down to enjoy pre-boarding lunch.

But as I stood up to board, feeling victorious, I felt something hit my shoe - one of the hair ties had given up. Yet, I boarded the plane with a smile, championing the droopy drawers saga with one hair tie holding my dignity together.

Hopefully, my disastrous morning brought a smile to your face! Remember, nothing should come between you and your comfort, not even a fashion rule. So, as you prepare for your next journey, give your undergarments the attention they deserve, and ensure a comfortable and happy travel experience.

Until next time, happy travels and even happier packing!

Yours in wanderlust,

Alyssa
