Capsule Wardrobing for the Journey Ahead

Capsule Wardrobing for the Journey Ahead

So here's the deal: Life’s a grand journey, and sometimes that journey takes us places—literal places. What we carry with us shouldn't just be baggage; it should be a selection of carefully curated armor that makes us feel like the warriors we are.

So, let’s talk about capsule wardrobing for travel.

Why Capsule Wardrobing, You Ask?

Imagine going into battle—not with armor that’s heavy, uncomfortable, and untested, but with pieces that you know and love. Items that not only make you feel at home in your body but are also versatile enough for the wild unknown. Imagine boarding that plane with nothing but a carry-on bag, feeling light, free, and still like a million bucks. Let’s make it happen.

The 10-14 Day Capsule Wardrobe

For a 10-14 day adventure, you’ll want a little more variety, but still nothing that requires you to check a bag. So, listen up, your 22" carry-on is going to become your best friend.

  • Tops: 3 short sleeves, 2 long sleeves, 2 tank tops
  • Bottoms: 1 jeans, 1 casual pants, 1 shorts, 1 skirt (4 total how you mix is your preferance)
  • Dresses: 1 casual, 1 slightly dressy
  • Outerwear: 1 light jacket, 1 cardigan
  • Shoes: 1 sneakers, 1 sandals (or boots as season a personality dictate), 1 cute but comfortable heel or wedge
  • Accessories: 1 scarf, 1 hat, 2 necklaces
  • Other: Swimsuit, 1 set of sleepwear, 7-10 pairs of underwear and socks.

That's it, warriors. With this list, you can create over 20 outfits. Just make sure that your pieces are neutral or complementary colors. All the tops need to go with all the bottoms!

The 5-7 Day Capsule Wardrobe

For a 5-7 day trip, you can be even more Spartan.

  • Tops: 2 short sleeves, 1 long sleeves, 1 tank tops
  • Bottoms: 1 jeans, 1 casual pants or shorts
  • Dresses: 1 casual
  • Outerwear: 1 light jacket or cardigan
  • Shoes: 1 sneakers, 1 flats (wear the bulkiest pair on the plane)
  • Accessories: 1 scarf, 1 necklace
  • Other: Swimsuit (if needed), 1 set of sleepwear, 5-7 pairs of underwear and socks.

The 2-3 Day Capsule Wardrobe

When you’re just getting away for a weekend, keep it simple.

  • Tops: 1 short sleeve, 1 long sleeve
  • Bottoms: 1 jeans or casual pants
  • Outerwear: 1 light jacket or cardigan
  • Shoes: 1 sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
  • Other: 1 set of sleepwear, 2-3 pairs of underwear and socks.

The Challenge: The 5-7 Day Journey with a Personal Item Only

Let’s get wild. What if all you had was an 18” x 14” x 8” bag?

  • Wear the bulk: On the plane, wear your heaviest items. Think jackets with multiple pockets. Stick your phone charger, some undergarments, maybe even a snack in those pockets.
  • Roll ‘em up: Rolling your clothes saves space. But what
  • about rolling your t-shirts and underwear inside your neck pillow case? Yep, you heard me. It's like a nesting doll of clothing!
  • Double-duty items: Your scarf can be a beach sarong, your cardigan can be your blanket, your necklace can be your crown because, sister, you’re royalty. Not sure about the last one but I was on a role.

This challenge isn’t just about clothes; it’s about life. We carry so much with us, from one day to the next, one year to the next. Let’s drop the heavy baggage, keeping only what makes us feel good, strong, and true to ourselves.

In the end, whether we're globe-trotting or navigating the labyrinth of life, our best capsule wardrobe is the inner armor of courage, love, and unapologetic authenticity. Don’t just pack light, live light.
